News Update: June 30, 2010, Attempted Arson Attack on Home of Pete Sumaruck Sheriff's deputies determined that paper had been forced into Mr. Sumaruck's home hot water heater in an attempt to cause a fire. The paper ignited and turned to charcoal crisps but burned out, failing to cause the hoped-for conflagration. The officers took pictures and deemed this as an official act of attempted arson.
The following is a letter written by inventor, Pete Sumaruck, sent to Hiker Central http://www.hikercentral.com/campgrounds/111091.html
where they requested reader comments regarding the Brazos River RV Campground in Texas. Story subtitled, "Trouble in Paradise."At this time, May 17, 2010, the Brazos River RV Park resort on the river is in turmoil due to mismanagement by the family/owners and the new managers. I have lived at the Brazos River Resort for years now - I’m a legal resident of both Texas and California, and go back and forth since 2004 when I was building a prototype for the Army - I am an inventor.
I became friends with Brazos owner Terry Reddell and especially his elderly and gracious mother (who recently told her family, "Pete is the nicest person we've ever had stay here"). A year ago March, I decided to prepay for two years, knowing that my business would keep me in Waco for at least another year.
Now I need to sue for the return of my second year’s payment -$4K per year; and all the trust and loyalty I, and other guests/renters felt for this place, has evaporated. His Honor, Mr. Reddell (he is also the mayor of Hubbard, TX, click on photo), and his son, Terry Jr. used my prepayment to build a new section of the park. He did move me to the best new spot at the far end of the park, with the understanding that I would be putting a new engine into my classic car, “no problem,” they told me. Abe, one of the other residents helped me with the repair; we made sure everything was clean and beautiful to include my own trailer which is only now, one year old - best trailer in the park.
I discussed this with both Terry Sr. and Jr. When you look at my receipt for the second year ($4,000), it does not stipulate any campground rules, like: no boat launching, no target practice on the river, and no walking on the private property bordering the Brazos campground - they gave me a favored position, and no rules applying to me. I trusted them.
Update, May 22, so much for Terry's supposed rules at this RV park - this morning someone fired 2 shots, 20 meters from my home. Pistol shots from a 38 special or a 9 mm...but I can protect myself, no problem (but what about people walking around outside just trying to enjoy the scenery).
It made me happy to know that because of me, Brazos park was becoming greatly improved. That didn’t last for long. Life here has turned into a small civil war - the owners vs. the tenants…what was then good management, is now a totalitarian regime; we all nicknamed the new managers, Adolph and Eva (Hitler, you remember them). And a list of strident new rules, to include - no breathing - and they can evict anyone at any time, without notice and without any refund.
I spoke to several attorneys and a judge and I found this is illegal according to Texas law. A couple of months ago, when the new managers ran out of money, I loaned Dave and his wife $700 - when someone is in trouble, I try to help out. Now they say they don’t owe me anything and my beautiful trailer is an eyesore. Terry Sr. has also given eviction orders to 12 others in the park. Soon the park will be like a ghost town with so many regulars left and leaving. This is now an unfriendly place.
Then there is the matter of the stolen experimental electric car (worth $23K), along with it’s $4K (value) 26ft. enclosed trailer. The car belongs to my friend U.S. Army Major Todd Hathaway, who left it here 8 months ago with it’s trailer. Todd thought I’d want to work on it, convert it to electric only - no battery - but I was too busy.
At that time, Terry Sr. told me Todd gave the car to him…but Todd never said that; (proof of this)Todd did not give Terry Sr. any papers on the items - no registration or transfer of ownership. Todd still holds ownership on the car, but Terry Sr. claimed it as his. Now this is something some people might call, “selling stolen property.” Terry Sr. turned around and sold the car to Abe, for $3,000 plus Abe’s Harley. The bike alone was worth $25K. Terry Sr. gave Abe a receipt for $500. Why would Abe take such a bad deal, because he’s out of money and disabled. Terry Sr. has the money and still has the trailer. Abe doesn’t have anything.
Yesterday, May 16, Major Hathaway came down from Washington, D.C. where he’s stationed, to pick up his car and the trailer. Abe gave Todd his car, but Terry Jr. would not give Todd the trailer. The trailer belongs to Todd’s friend Nick, but Todd brought with him the trailer license and registration, along with a letter from Nick, so Terry had no reason not to give the trailer back to Todd - his Honor, the Mayor refused.
The 5 sheriff’s deputies did nothing, just let this criminal act happen…because Terry Reddell is the Mayor of Hubbard, TX (population 1752).
The sheriffs told us they would file a report and have their detectives launch an investigation.
Abe remains without the $3K, no Harley and no car. And me, I’m heading off to court on the 24th, along with 3 others evicted, no reason stated. Nine other trailers of long term residents already left last week. Oh yes, and the car's trailer disappeared at 6 PM today - Terry’s younger son “removed” it from Brazos RV Park - removing the evidence - wonder where that went?
My suggestion to future Brazos campers - watch your cars and trucks, don’t look away for a minute. Brazos Park is nice by the river, but the management is the problem. One last thing - your website talks to hikers - if you heard there were hiking trails at Brazos RV Park, there just aren‘t any, sorry. Better yet, stay someplace else, “away from these crooked whores.”
Update - May 18 - This morning, I asked the sheriff’s department what’s happening with the detectives’ investigation and the report filed.
They told me they don’t have detectives and there is no evidence of a any report filed.
I called Todd and he said he’s going to the FBI in Washington. I’m going to the FBI, here right now...just gets worse. “This is the biggest bunch of horse shit...”
From Pete Sumaruck, May 18, 2010
Update, May 21 - Todd and Nick have given me power of attorney to make decisions for them, regarding the stolen property issues.
