Artists in the Russian school often evoke, as an expression of the Russian character, a sense of ominous foreboding as it is in this painting of forest and sea. There is some darkness behind us and on each side. The ocean is "freedom" but our escape is blocked by spindly dying trees. There is no sentimentalism here, life simply is as it is…and beautiful in a lyrical sense.
